Director of Movense Entertainment Private Limited is Gaurav Vij. Before starting Movense, He was an engineering graduate from NSIT, Delhi. He always been a passionate science student and wondered how the universe works? What is the value of a human in front of this vast universe? He took part in building a solar powered electric vehicle in sophomore years at college. Being a college project, it was a insightful experience for him.He learnt a lot of things during that phase such as fundraising, team management, vision definition for team. After solar car project, He went on to create a software platform that helped businesses connect with Instagram influencers for brand marketing. It was another venture experience towards creating something valuable of his own. He never sat for placements in college years and knew he will soon be starting up.
The original vision while creating this venture with his college friend Himanshu, was to build an entirely new form of interactive digital engagement method for consumers. Virtual reality was a new form of experience in 2016 that made people immerse in completely different environments. So they started with a VR based travel platform where people can see interactive experiences of global tourist hotspots while sitting in their couch. But soon they figured out the drag VR had in adoption and started building own engagement method i.e. a new file format (.move) that supported interactive experiences such as bringing a photo alive on touch swipe, making the moment go back in time (such as making a waterfall flow backwards just on flip of wrist), and 360 degree/3d interactive showcasing of products to engage audiences online. The vision transformed into replacing static photos (jpegs) with interactive photos (moves).The vision of creating a global software based photography phenomenon from India with a united spirit of their team to keep developing state of the art technology for consumers and enterprises.

Gaurav and co-founder Himanshu had a knack of being an entrepreneur from college days. Coming from same alma-mater NSIT, both kept on discussing several ideas around which they can begin journey. One of them was Infireach.They started Movense as a hobby to learn how to do marketing and business. It was a portal to connect fashion/food startups with Instagram influencers. They earned quite a bit that time through it and learnt the tricks of trade. The money they earned was later used to begin Movense, a complete tech play with an endeavour to revolutionise the photography industry!

After that the Duo got selected in Nasscom 10K startups program and received great amount of support in initial setup. Himanshu led the technology and Gaurav led the business development.They hired few tech interns and then met Arvind Jha. With a vast tech experience at Adobe and a notable investor, Arvind not only invested in their vision but mentored them in terms of how they can add value to the society through technology and create a revolutionary product. They grew team to 5 members. All tech lovers. Then received further investment and business guidance from notable investors such as Nirav Choksi and Rajeev Saraf. Meanwhile, the products and technology kept evolving with a growth in users on board and a new vision to revolutionise the e-retail industry with 3D product views.

One of the biggest issue that Gaurav and Himanshu faced while starting up was the lack of risk capital in India. Majority of Investors have a disregard for an idea that doesn’t give them quick returns. Also, there’s a very big bias in the industry regarding the background of entrepreneur. A lot of IITians with no proven track record of doing business in past have received heavy cash flows from investors to survive for years. There’s nothing bad about it. It’s after all the investors money. But this risk averse mentality will not reap innovative businesses. They did limited marketing and hired limited amount of talent with the resources they had, bootstrapped till they found investors that believed in their vision. Also,they have faced cash crunch situation several times in their journey. They managed it through limiting operational costs and bearing the costs through own pockets. But nothing stopped them from executing revolutionary ideas.

Gaurav says “We learnt and evolved. There’s no limit to learning. But there’s limit on the time you have to make a thing work. Some of the elements of technology we learnt and quickly iterated on our own. Once we developed a prototype and figured out the process, we hired individuals who could accelerate the development and build a scalable software product. With constraints on budgeting,we pulled it on our own.So the management i.e. Himanshu and Me managed everything from HR, training to hiring, tech and business development”.

It takes good amount of investment (not only money, but time and thought as well) to change the consumer behaviour. They are bringing a paradigm shift from static images to engaging and more interactive content. It takes time and is a challenge in itself. What matters is the effort put in to bring a revolution. No matter where you are coming from or what your current status is.

We have focused on a different Go to market approach. Rather than going consumer first, we are now going business first. When businesses will start accumulating engaging content on their platforms, users will automatically become aware and enlightened with the kind of experience they can get through this medium of content .One of the fundamentals that I’ve tried to imbibe in my organisation is to never run after instant gratification. Always focus on core values and not quick rich things. Never be disturbed by what others are doing. Be aware of the competition but focus on giving the best of what you can“added Gaurav.

They wish to see Movense on the global map.The vision of replacing old methods of displaying products and experiences online with new interactive experiences produced by their technology. That will change the entire landscape of consumer experience on a website.
